Manicure tutorial - Nailing the rainbow

Manicure tutorial - Nailing the rainbow
Erin Margrethe is a Melbourne based nail artist originally hailing from California. Eschewing traditional manicure methods, you're just as likely to find Erin shopping at the craft store as the beauty counter.
She has a Tumblr that chronicles her playtimes with polish.
We asked her to come up with a special manicure for TheVine, and teach us how to DIY it.

There's always a certain point in winter when my clients start grabbing the bright, summery nail polish over the traditional deep colors of the colder months. Whether it's a longing for warmer weather or just a quick way to inject a little brightness into a winter wardrobe of blacks and greys, it's a trend that repeats itself year after year. With that in mind, what could better than rainbows on your nails? This look is easy to achieve on long or short nails.
Filing the nails so that they're gently rounded creates the perfect rainbow arc, so if you normally have square nails, try rounding the corners just slightly. For shorter nails, try angling the stripes of polish diagonally across the nail.
Start by degreasing the nails by wiping them down with a nail polish remover and a cotton pad. Apply a base coat (I like CND's Stickey). Apply one coat of a sheer nude polish. For a more dramatic look, use white polish instead of nude as the base color, so it looks like your rainbow is resting on a cloud.

Paint the tip on your thumb using a bright orange polish, starting about a third of the way down your nail. Don't worry about getting polish on your fingers or cuticles! Just have a wooden cuticle stick dipped in polish remover on hand to clean up as you go. Continue with your index fingers in yellow polish, middle fingers in green, ring fingers in blue, and pinkies in light purple.
Starting with the thumbs again, paint the top half of the orange tip in red. Continue with orange on the index fingers, yellow on the middle fingers, light purple on the ring fingers, and a darker purple on the pinkies.
I used matching loose craft glitter on the tips, but a clear glitter polish would be easier and faster (not to mention less messy!) for those of you following along at home. Finish with a high quality, fast drying top coat (I love Seche Vite).
For shorter nails with no free-edge on which to paint a tip, angle the stripes of polish diagonally across the nail for a rainbow colour-blocking effect.
