Smoke in galley forces Air Canada jet to return to Sydney

An Air Canada aircraft carrying 264 passengers has been forced to return to Sydney today after crew detected smoke in the galley of the plane shortly after take-off.
The Boeing 777 aircraft had departed Sydney Airport at 10.25am en route for Vancouver.
The plane, which had four infants on board, landed safely at Sydney Airport at 12.16pm.

Air Canada's general manager for Australia and New Zealand, Jeannie Foster, said the plane's captain had not declared an emergency but dumped fuel before returning to Sydney.
Ms Foster said smoke was detected coming from an oven in the aircraft's galley.
An Australian Transport Safety Bureau spokesman told AAP that the airline had reported "smoke in the cabin".
A Sydney Airport spokesman said the plane had done an "air return".
"It's doing an air return ... an air return usually means they are coming back as a precaution," he told AAP.
Fire and Rescue NSW said it was a "minor incident" and emergency crews were not required at the airport.
