Chanel makes lips matt-er

Red lips, lipstick. Viva glam ... vibrant colour makes a comeback at the cosmetics counter.
Where Chanel goes, will you follow? In a week when a deluge of lovely new lip balms and glosses hit my desk, a special delivery in black and white, and beribboned with linked Cs, arrived with some fanfare (I had to sign at the front door at 7am). Inside was a preciously wrapped Chanel lipstick. The formulation, like the lip balms and glosses, is luminous. But, very unlike them, it is matte.

Rouge Allure Velvet is highly pigmented and delivers a velvety, textured finish. Peter Philips, creative director of Chanel Makeup, describes it as ''sophisticated'' - it is designed to create a dramatic, intense look and comes in eight bold shades, including a hot pink, L'Exuberante, and a magnetic red, La Fasinante. You will have to wait to try it - it is not on counter until September 4. Until then, is it worth considering all the lip glosses and blams that have been launched on the Australian market? Is shine in style?

Winter may not be the season we associate with fruity, glossy mouths but it is the time of year that lips need protecting and moisturising, which is exactly what most of the new lip balms do. With a wash of colour. And at fraction of the cost of the Chanel lipstick (which will be $50). But what is comes down to is taste and style. What it really comes down to here is gloss versus matte.

The glosses available this season are lovely. The new Natio Antioxidant Lip Shine ($11.95) is a dual-action luminous gloss with the moisturising benefits of a balm, so it keeps lips hydrated and flake-free. ''Vitamins C and E act as a barrier to keep lips supple and protected in the cold,'' says Natio product development manager Susheel Gandhi. The five shades are sheer and play on the mouth’s natural colour while adding warmth to a dull winter complexion. They include Grace (shimmering pink champagne), Faith (luminous plum) and Love (bright cherry red).

Bloom and Boost Juice, two Australian brands loved by fruity young things, have collaborated to release six lip balms inspired by smoothies - hence the names Strawberry Squeeze, Mango Tango and Banana Buzz. The fruity smelling lip balms ($6.95) contain soothing beeswax, nourishing jojoba seed oil and moisturising vitamin E. The super-moisturising and repairing Lanolips Lip Ointment ($17.95) also comes in fruity flavours (Rhubarb, a fruity pink, is the best seller; there's also Apples which I find amusing for some reason) and with colour and SPF (and they're cheaper than the original at $13.95). Burt's Bees Tinted Lip Balms ($14.95) give a subtle, soft finish to the lips. Flowers not fruit (well we are talking about the bees not the birds) are the ''inspiration'': the six shades include Hibiscus and Pink Blossom. More sophisticated but equally effortless is Laura Mercier's Gel Lip Colour, which will be available on limited release from July 31 at David Jones and Myer. It's a clear, super-soft formula that glides on to give a soft colour wash. Six shades and $39.

All of these products are so easy to use you hardly need a mirror. They tick the boxes for colouring and moisturising dry, chapped winter lips. Yet there is something alluring about Rouge Allure Velvet, the first luminous matte lipstick in Chanel's history - something somehow right about a strong, matte mouth. What do you favour - shine or velvet? Do you prefer glosses or denser, more pigmented lipsticks? What sort are you using on your lips now? Will you be taking the lead and moving to matte even before the September release date of the Chanel?
