Salary spotlight: Civil engineers

Civil engineers must graduate from university with a bachelor degree or diploma to manage the building of bridges, dams, pipelines, sewerage systems, gas and water supply schemes, roads and airports. Tasks include structural design, selecting construction methods and materials and estimating construction costs. According to the federal government, civil engineers earn an average weekly salary of $1472. The annual advertised salary on mycareer.com.au is $115,722, peaking at $230,000. There are 34,900 civil engineers working in Australia. The median age is 40.6 and more than 90 per cent of employees are male. The outlook for civil engineers is good — employment to 2012-13 is expected to grow slightly. Employment in this large occupation rose moderately in the past five years. Civil engineers have a high proportion of full-time jobs (93 per cent). For those working full-time, average weekly hours are 42 (compared with 41.8 for all occupations) and earnings are high — in the 10th decile. Unemployment for engineers is below average.
