The faint romantic strains of the accordion are growing stronger as France's favourite holiday is only days away. Bastille day- a very good excuse for a very long lunch and a mid-week wine and dine, is also generally abused as an excuse to sport one's favourite tourist t-shirts and break out the beret. Let's face it, given our sense of humour Australians can pretty much get away with anything trop touristic- just add tongue in cheek and a touch of charm, but if you wouldn't wear head-to-toe green on St Patrick's Day, you needn't drape yourself in the French flag for Bastille Day.
A touch of the red, white and blue, the quintessential stripe or the ubiquitous polka dot, however, wouldn't go astray.
Instead of trying to take on all the patriotism of a Deli France logo, have a think about what is is that give the French that extra bit of flair. Reinvent classics with Tom Scott's clever dual layer 'polka dot' knit over one of Equipment's washed silk Signature blouses. Just add a lick of leather from Jitrois and some banging Balenciaga heels and you're pure Parisian understated chic. For a little bit of flirtatious fun, pair diamante spots with striped Rykiel shorts and a man-style blazer and dance from day into night, or reinvent showgirl chic with an embroidered and embellished t-shirt dress with heavier ruffled heels from Viktor & Rolf and throw on a lambswool Lanvin coat. Experiment with the unexpected, and have a sense of laid back sense of style, whatever you decide to do- Happy Bastille Day!
