It seems the Tihar administration didn’t learn any lesson from the recent incident of undue hospitality to Suresh Kalmadi in which a superintendent was transferred when he was caught sipping tea with Kalmadi in his room. Later, four more employees were suspended when a special judge found special treatment being meted out to the VIPs during a surprise visit.
In another incident of flouting norms, a superintendent of the Tihar jail did not let the police check the 2G scam accused under CCTV surveillance and got it done in his room. The incident occurred on Saturday morning when the accused of 2G-scam case, Swan Telecom director Vinod Goenka, Unitech Wireless Ltd. managing director Sanjay Chandra, and three top officials of the Reliance ADA Group — Gautam Doshi, Surendra Pipara and Hari Nair — were being taken to the Patiala House court for hearing.
According to the sources, when the police staff started frisking the prisoners being taken to a jail van, a superintendent stopped the police officer from frisking the 5 accused. The police officer had an altercation with the superintendent who told the officer to check the 5 accused separately in his room. The officer then sent his staff to check the five accused in the superintendent’s room. Then they were taken to the court.
When asked about the deviance, the Tihar spokesperson denied that any such incident happened.
However, sources said that the police officer wanted to check all the five accused in front of the CCTV cameras where the frisking is usually done but for reasons unknown, the superintendent told the officer to not check the high-profile inmates like normal prisoners. The officer argued and said that this is beyond law and he can’t do this but finally all of them were checked separately in the superintendent’s room.
