Students surround Matthew Lewis, a.k.a. Neville Longbottom at the launch for Harry Potter - The Exhibition
The arrival of a new Harry Potter exhibition in Sydney has excited Potter fans across the city, but none more so than those in the franchise’s target audience.A group of one-hundred and twenty children, dressed for their first day at Hogwarts with robes and wands, were invited to a sneak peek of the upcoming Harry Potter – The Exhibition at the Powerhouse Museum this morning.
The exhibition, set to open in November, will feature props, costumes and set replicas from the film series. Twelve-year-old Laura was thrilled to see one of her favourite props at the preview. “I got to see the big knight, which has always been my favourite chess piece so that was really great,” she said.

While the event was opened by Deputy Premier Andrew Stoner, there was no confusing the main attraction, with Matthew Lewis, the actor who played Neville Longbottom in the films in attendance. Before the 22-year-old was surrounded by a horde of (older) screaming fans, the kids had a chance to ask questions and have their photo taken with him.
“I was excited to see him because he plays a really big role in the latest movie,” said nine-year-old Konstandina.
The exhibition comes to Australia straight from New York, and is aimed to temporarily fill the void left after the release of the final film, Harry Potter and the Dealthly Hallows: Part 2. Konstandina is looking forward to attending the exhibition and re-living the magic.
“I was upset that there won’t be anymore,” she said, “but I’ll definitely come to the exhibition because my little brother will want to come.”
The exhibition opens at Sydney’s Powerhouse Museum on November 19 and runs to March 18, 2012.
