A Perth woman is recovering in hospital in Croatia after she was injured in a cliff fall, the latest casualty in a string of similar accidents involving young Australian backpackers in the country. The 20-year-old woman was believed to be attempting to jump from a cliff into water in the popular holiday destination of Dubrovnik on Saturday when the accident occurred.
The woman did not judge the distance correctly and fell onto rocks near the water's edge, the Croatian Times reported.
In an almost identical incident one year ago, Melbourne woman Tanya Hearnden was critically injured when she fell from the old city walls of Dubrovnik.
The 24-year-old Werribee woman broke both her arms, her jaw, ribs and hip, and had her kidney and spleen removed following the fall on August 2.
Her family said she was planning to jump from the cliff into the water but decided at the last moment to withdraw. As she turned to move away from the edge, she slipped and fell, plunging on to the rocks below.
Less than 24 hours later, a 25-year-old West Australian man was hospitalised after jumping off a ravine in Croatian and hitting a concrete roof in the town of Split.
The body of Australian backpacker Britt Lapthorne was found not far from the same area. Britt went missing in September 2008. Her body was found weeks later by a local fisherman.
In June this year, a 25-year-old Victorian man was killed when he plunged about 10 metres down a cliff in the popular tourist town of Bol, on the south of the island of Brac.
Following the latest fall, a Department of Foreign Affairs spokesperson said the department was providing assistance to the woman and her family.
"Consular officials from the Australian Embassy in Zagreb are providing consular assistance to a 20-year-old woman from Perth, who is in hospital in Croatia. They are also assisting her family," the spokesperson said.
"Officials in Canberra are assisting the woman's family in Australia."
